Your part:
“Surrealism is destructive, but it
destroys only what it considers to be
shackles limiting our vision.”
~Salvador Dali
Miles Davis once said, Don’t play what’s there, play what isn’t there. If you’ve ever listened to his 1959 album, Kind of Blue, you know what I mean. The same is true in the visual arts. The subconscious is that part that is between the notes. That part, between the notes, is the construct of all true art.
Ultimately, good art is a conversation between the artist and you, the viewer. Art appreciation is not passive, it’s interactive. You, the viewer, bring a lifetime of experiences, your intuitive nature and innate sensibilities. It might even be argued that art does not exist until you perceive it. You are the final brush stroke, the final errant mark. No two people ever perceive the same work of art exactly the same. This isn’t a good thing… this is a great thing. It stokes the fires of the creative process.
Ultimately, you are what brings art full circle and keeps the arts alive.
